Raleigh Regional Association of REALTORS® Observe REALTOR® Safety Week

RALEIGH, N.C.- To raise awareness about vital safety issues, the Raleigh Regional Association of REALTORS® (RRAR) participated in the first-ever REALTOR® Safety Week, which was officially designated by the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (NAR) the week of September 14-20, 2003.

Due to their frequent contact with unfamiliar people in private locations, real estate agents face more on the job risks than many other business professionals. According to the most recent statistics from the National Safety Council, there were 57 violent crimes committed against real estate practitioners in 2001. Six of them were fatal* (*Source: National Safety Council, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®).

Leigh Woody, Senior trainer from Citizens Against Crime, spoke to Raleigh area REALTORS® at the RRAR Safety Seminar, which was held on September 18, 2003. RRAR has passed on a set of recommendations from NAR that could possibly save the lives of our members. Among the suggestions are mandatory office policies for better identification of prospects to make it more difficult for criminals to target real estate agents.

“Safety has been identified as a #1 priority for RRAR,” states Eddie Brown, President of the RRAR. “Although REALTOR® Safety Week was only seven days in September, our commitment to this crucial issue is on-going. We intend to keep this issue and the goals to inform REALTORS® of new safety measures, top-of-mind for members throughout the year.”
