Do you know where your buyer's information is?
Do you know
where your buyer’s
information is?
How secure is your buyer’s
information right now? Is it on the office fax machine, open on the seat
of your car after that quick chat with the lender, or was it just e-mailed
via unencrypted e-mail?
As independent contractors,
REALTORS® are
responsible for managing many aspects of their business lives, and are
entrusted by their clients with a great deal of personal information. Everyday
our clients hear about more cases of identity theft and they will ask what
our policies are for preventing it, especially if they have provided loan
applications, pay documents or credit information.
USA Today reports that within five years, everyone will be affected
by identify theft in some way. New regulations under FACTA now require all businesses
to have an identity theft program in place. If you have been keeping your
client’s files in the back of your car or out on your desk, you’re not alone,
but now is the time to rethink your policies.
“Identity theft is the fastest growing white-collar
crime in the nation,” says Caroline Farmer of the North Carolina Attorney
General’s office. “Identity thieves have stolen the social security numbers
of more than 150 million individuals in the two short years that security
breaches have been tracked.”
Learn
what new protections exist in this state and what simple steps you can
take to avoid being a victim by attending the Women’s Council of REALTORS® meeting
at 8:45 a.m. on April 2 at
111 Realtors Way, where Farmer will speak more about identity theft and
prevention.
